The Eastern Economic Forum was established by the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation V.V. Putin dated May 19, 2015. in order to promote the development of the economy of the Far East and expand international cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region. In accordance with the decree, the Eastern Economic Forum is held annually in the city of Vladivostok.

The Forum's events traditionally take place in the format of panel sessions, round tables, TV debates, business breakfasts and business dialogues dedicated to Russia's relations with various countries of the world. The business program of the Forum includes business dialogues with leading partner countries in the Asia-Pacific region, as well as with ASEAN, a key integration grouping of actively developing countries in Southeast Asia.
