Anton Kobyakov at IAF-2025: The Arctic is the main geopolitical and geo–economic pole of tomorrow

The Arctic is the main geopolitical and geo–economic pole of today and tomorrow, and worldwide interest in the region is unprecedented, Anton Kobyakov, Adviser to the President of the Russian Federation and Executive Secretary of the Organizing Committee of the VI International Arctic Forum "Arctic – Territory of Dialogue", said during a press conference.

"Representatives of 21 countries, about 1,300 people, including delegates from the United States, our European and Asian colleagues have already participated in the events of the forum. It is symbolic that the main Arctic forum is being held in conjunction with the 500th anniversary of the most important event in the history of Russian Arctic exploration, which is being celebrated this year - the drafting of the first draft of the Northern Sea Route and the first map of the shores of the Arctic Ocean. And just a few days ago, on March 10, the President of Russia signed a decree on the creation of an Organizing Committee for the preparation and celebration of this significant date," emphasized Anton Kobyakov.

According to him, the Arctic is of strategic importance for Russia – more than 15% of the country's GDP is generated here. The region contains reserves of fresh water, energy resources and minerals, including rare earth metals. In addition, the territories of high latitudes play an important role in the formation of trade chains due to the Northern Sea Route, and also ensure the country's defense capability. Further development of the Arctic region should be based on improving the quality of life of people by modernizing infrastructure and social facilities, ensuring transport accessibility and diversifying the economy.

"Right now, the Arctic is becoming a territory of opportunity for the whole country. Taking into account the revision of traditional technological chains, taking into account participation in large-scale Arctic projects, huge prospects open up for enterprises all over the country and creative creative people. The development of the Northern Sea Route as the main transport artery in the Arctic, the construction of new railway approaches to the northern ports will also have a multiplier effect for the whole country," said Anton Kobyakov.

Russia's achievements in the development of the Arctic must also be promoted internationally, the Presidential Adviser stressed.

"Within the framework of the upcoming major international forums, including the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum and the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, the Arctic theme will be taken into account and highlighted in a separate block of the business program of events," he concluded.

The VI International Arctic Forum "The Arctic – the Territory of Dialogue" is a key platform for discussing topical issues of socio-economic development of the Arctic territories, developing multi-level multilateral mechanisms for joint disclosure and effective development of the powerful resource potential of the Arctic region. The organizer is the Roscongress Foundation with the support of the Government of the Russian Federation.
