Marine collagen produced by the Murmansk company RMM Bioinnovation (KolaCollagen brand) is used to create new medical materials. Together with N. I. Lobachevsky Nizhny Novgorod State University (NNSU), the company is developing the use of collagen from Atlantic cod in wound healing materials.
For scientific work, RMM Bioinnovation donated high-molecular-weight native collagen to UNN specialists. In recent months, researchers have developed a laboratory technology for producing wound coatings based on it and have prepared technical specifications and technological regulations.
"Cooperation with UNN is an opportunity to expand the use of marine collagen and participate in the creation of new products based on it. When we started the project, we were talking about the first studies, and today the laboratory technology has already been developed. It is important for us that the collagen produced in Murmansk becomes the basis for new developments in the field of biotechnology and medicine," said Anastasia Starovoitova, Director of Production at RMM Bioinnovation.

One of the advantages of fish collagen for such developments is its properties as a natural material. According to Lyudmila Semenycheva, Head of the Research Laboratory of Petrochemistry at the National Research Institute of National Research University, Doctor of Chemical Sciences, fish collagen is closest to human collagen in its characteristics, composition and structure. Materials based on it have high biocompatibility and are capable of bioresorption – the complete assimilation of medical materials by the body.
In addition, the obtained samples have regenerating and anti-inflammatory properties, as well as biocidal properties that inhibit the growth of harmful microorganisms.
