Governor Andrey Chibis and Head of MTP Lavna Stanislav Multakh discussed the development of MTU

The development of the Murmansk transport hub, and in particular, the implementation of the Lavna Coal Transshipment Complex, was discussed today during a working meeting between Governor Andrey Chibis and CEO of MTP Lavna Stanislav Multakh.

Andrey Chibis recalled that the Lavna commercial port is one of the key infrastructure facilities for the Murmansk Region and the Russian economy and a powerful transport hub along the Transarctic Transport Corridor. Its development is extremely important for the entire Arctic port system.

"This is a landmark project: in fact, the first new port has been built in the Murmansk Region since the Soviet Union. This is an anchor project for the Murmansk transport hub – the base of the Northern Sea Route, the Transarctic Transport Corridor. In March, President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin gave the command to launch coal transshipment at the port within the framework of the International Arctic Forum. Before that, in December 2023, the head of state also launched a working movement along a new railway line to the port – almost 50 km. Let's talk about what else needs to be done in order to fully reach the design capacity for the tasks set by the President," the governor stressed.

The new ice-free deep-water port has direct access to the World Ocean and will help open up new export routes for Russian coal. This is one of the most modern transshipment complexes in Russia. The planned volume of transshipment at the terminal is 18 million tons per year, with an increase to 24 million tons in the future. In addition, the project will help transfer coal transshipment from the center of Murmansk to the western shore of the Kola Bay. The terminal uses modern equipment, including tandem dump trucks, as well as closed belts for transporting coal.

"First of all, thank you for the support provided by the Government of the Murmansk region, and you personally, Andrey Vladimirovich. The project is in its final stage, and commissioning is actively underway. In June, we turned over the first coal wagons, which is an important event for us. And more than 200 wagons have already been processed, these are three trains, unloading is carried out using a specialized automatic station," Stanislav Multakh said.

It should be recalled that the issue of enhancing the development of the Murmansk transport hub was systematically worked out by the regional government headed by the governor. The support of the President of Russia was received and all necessary decisions were taken to complete the railway and create a multimodal logistics hub. In March of this year, Vladimir Putin instructed to increase the capacity of the MTU by at least three times in the coming years through the construction of new terminals and the expansion of railway approaches.
