Murmansk transport hub may become one of the leading freight transportation centers in Russia

Andrey Chibis, Governor of the Murmansk Region, took part in a meeting in Moscow on the integrated development of the Murmansk transport hub, chaired by Roman Starovoit, Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation.

The event was also attended by representatives of the Government of the Russian Federation, Roszheldor, Rosmorrechflot, FKU Rostransmodernizatsiya, JSC GTLK, JSC Russian Railways, PJSC Rosseti and ANO DMTC.

Work to increase the carrying capacity of the railway approaches to the port of Murmansk is being carried out by the Government of the Murmansk Region together with interested shippers as part of the instructions of the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin.

It was noted at the meeting that the Murmansk transport hub could become one of the leading freight transportation centers in Russia.

"In general, the Murmansk region is actively developing now. Andrey Vladimirovich, thank you and your entire team! Indeed, many investment projects in various areas are being implemented in the region. Regarding the development of transport infrastructure and logistics, we must keep our joint projects with the region under review," said Russian Transport Minister Roman Starovoit.

Governor Andrey Chibis stressed that the development of the Murmansk transport hub is of strategic importance not only for the Murmansk region, but also for the entire Arctic zone of Russia.

"The Murmansk transport hub, as a key element of the Northern Sea Route, is of key importance for strengthening the logistics potential of the region and developing international cooperation. We are continuing to build the necessary infrastructure on the western shore of the Kola Bay. This will not only strengthen the logistics of the region, but also strengthen Russia's position in the Arctic, making the Northern Sea Route even more competitive on a global level," said Andrey Chibis.

During the meeting, special attention was paid to issues related to the launch of the Lavna terminal.

The Lavna coal terminal is one of the most modern transshipment complexes in Russia. Currently, the work there is entering the final stage: one line is fully ready, and commissioning is being completed. It is planned to create more than 650 jobs at the terminal.

During the meeting, they also considered the possibilities of increasing the capacity of the MTU, including for a multifunctional cargo transshipment terminal in the Republic of Belarus.

The key goal of the implementation of the "short-range" railway approaches is to expand transport accessibility to the port of Lavna through the construction of short-range railway approaches with a length of about 50 km, as well as to ensure a throughput capacity of up to 18 million tons of cargo to the newly built port of Lavna. Currently, up to 6 million tons of cargo can be transported by rail. It should be recalled that the working traffic on the railway bridge across Tuloma – from the Exit station to the Lavna port on the western shore of the Kola Bay was launched in December 2023. The start of the labor movement was given by the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin.

After the construction of the Murmansk transport hub is completed, the capacity of railway approaches to the port of Murmansk will reach 45 million tons of cargo per year, including 18 million tons to the western shore of the Kola Bay.

"I thank Roman Vladimirovich for his attention to the project, coordination of the work of all participants and constructive dialogue," said Andrey Chibis following the meeting.
