In the Government of the Murmansk Region, Governor Andrey Chibis held a meeting with participants of the visiting meeting of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs under the leadership of Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council Konstantin Kosachev. The topic of the meeting was devoted to the issues of compliance with the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

The head of the region, opening the meeting, noted that the Convention is of great importance from the point of view of ensuring Russia's interests in the development of the oceans, especially in the Arctic zone.

"The topic is not an easy one, but it is extremely relevant in our time, directly related to the development of the Northern Sea Route, with the influence of our country in the Arctic. And today, discussions around the Arctic are heating up. We must respond to this clearly. The Northern Sea Route is our sovereign corridor," Andrei Chibis said.

The Governor also stressed that the country as a whole and the Murmansk Region in particular, thanks to the Northern Sea Route, new opportunities for international cooperation are emerging.

"The Murmansk Region is directly connected with the development of the Northern Sea Route. The port of Murmansk is a strategic port, where today, taking into account the decisions of the President, large-scale projects are being implemented that have made it possible to increase the carrying capacity. We are actively implementing the Murmansk transport hub, last year we launched a working movement on a new railway, we are developing the western shore of the Kola Bay, where the new port of Lavna is being built. The deep-sea ice-free port of Murmansk is becoming a powerful logistics hub. Everything related to the development of the Northern Sea Route is of key economic importance. And for our part, we are making every effort to ensure the development of the Murmansk Region as one of the strategic regions of the Arctic. Including the development of the Murmansk transport hub and its key facilities," Andrei Chibis noted, stressing that the proposals of the Federation Council to protect Russia's national interests in the Arctic will be taken into account in the work of the State Council commission on the Northern Sea Route and the Arctic, where Governor Andrei Chibis is chairman.

Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Konstantin Kosachev thanked the head of the region Andrey Chibis for a productive meeting, noting that in addition to the stated agenda, much attention will be paid to the development of the Murmansk region.

"Maritime law and international relations in the field of Arctic development are of particular geopolitical importance today. The discussion of practical and legislative steps to implement Russian policy in the region is part of the agenda of the visiting meeting of the Federation Council. We are committed to serious work and are confident that we can count on the active participation of the government of the Murmansk region on this issue," he said.
