Preparations for the construction of the Kola NPP-2 have been launched in Polar Dawns. The event was attended by the Governor of the Murmansk region Andrey Chibis, the management of the Kola nuclear power plant, as well as representatives of the general contractor.
"This is a landmark day and a grandiose project, not even for a decade, but for the next century. The world's first nuclear power plant with innovative medium-capacity units will be built in Polar Dawns. The construction of the Kola NPP-2 will open up opportunities for launching new industrial projects and will become a driver of socio-economic development of the entire Arctic zone of Russia. The implementation of such a large-scale project will create more than 5,000 new jobs during the construction phase and will require hundreds of highly qualified specialists during operation. For the Murmansk Region, the commissioning of KAES-2 means guaranteed and uninterrupted power supply to industrial enterprises and social infrastructure. In the future, the new power units will help maintain the energy balance of the region after the decommissioning of existing facilities," the governor stressed.
Kola NPP-2 is a strategic investment project of the Rosatom State Corporation. The plant will consist of two power units with innovative VVER-C type reactors with spectral control with a capacity of 600 MW each, which will be more economical due to the efficient use of nuclear fuel. The service life of the main technological equipment will be 80 years, and the power units – at least 60 years. The general designer of Kola NPP-2 is JSC Atomenergoproekt, the general contractor is JSC Concern Titan-2. The project is included in the General Layout of electric power facilities until 2042, is part of the national program "Live in the North" and is under the personal control of the President of the Russian Federation.
Director of the Kola NPP Vasily Omelchuk noted that the construction of the Kola NPP-2 is a logical continuation of the development of nuclear energy on the Kola Peninsula.
"We are not starting from scratch: the team has many years of experience in operating an existing plant, well–established processes and high professionalism. The personnel issue has also been worked out: We will train young specialists and, as the existing units are decommissioned, transfer our employees to new facilities. This is a proven path, and we are ready for it." – said Vasily Omelchuk.
In the near future, the general contractor, CONCERN TITAN–2 JSC, will begin the construction of access roads, the construction of a construction and installation base, the planning of the territory and the maintenance of forest plantations. Earlier, in January and June 2026, working meetings were already held with the participation of the regional government and potential contractors, at which the volume of field surveys, logistics of future construction and staffing requirements were determined.
The main construction period will begin after the completion of the full design, passing the state expertise and obtaining a license for the construction from Rostechnadzor.
The commissioning of the first power unit is scheduled for 2035, and the second for 2037. Alexey Likhachev, CEO of Rosatom State Corporation, stressed that the Kola NPP-2 will be the largest energy project in the region, meeting high safety standards and modern requirements for the maneuverability of power systems, which is especially important for territories with network restrictions.
