Investment digest: Murmansk Region confirms socio-economic stability

The Murmansk Region Development Corporation presented a digest of events that had a positive impact on the investment attractiveness of the region in early 2023. The collection is published monthly on the Investment Portal of the Murmansk Region and includes news related to the implementation of investment projects, as well as expert opinions and analytical data.

At the beginning of the year, Russia named the TOP 35 most sustainable regions. The Murmansk region took the ninth place in this rating. In general, the Arctic regions maintain socio-economic stability, the authors of the study comment on the results.

In January, Governor Andrey Chibis announced priority measures for 2023 within the framework of the strategic plan "To Live in the North", including the implementation of the construction of the Murmansk transport hub, the development of lithium deposits, the creation of infrastructure for investors on the western shore of the Kola Bay. The Governor closely monitors the progress of the implementation of key projects for the Murmansk region and at the beginning of the year personally checked the progress of the construction of the Lavna seaport. During the trip, the head of the region made sure that the work at the facility was going well and smoothly.

Also in January, the volumes of cargo transshipment in seaports for 2022 became known. The annual cargo turnover of the ports of Murmansk exceeded 56 million tons: this is a record value among the ports of the Arctic basin.

Another news that drew attention to the northern regions at the federal level was the statement by Yuri Trutnev that the growth rate of investments in the Arctic is a quarter higher than in the Far East. The Arctic zone of the Russian Federation is extremely attractive and rich in resources, but it has not been developed enough yet, the Presidential Envoy noted in his speech.

It is worth noting that in January, the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation was replenished with two new residents from the Murmansk region – the number of projects implemented using Arctic preferences increased to 184, and the planned volume of investments as a result of their implementation exceeded 151 billion rubles (as of 02/22/2023, the number of residents is 188).
