As part of the business program of the Day of the Far East and the Arctic, a plenary session "The Far East and the Arctic - the Future of Russia" was held at the international exhibition and forum "Russia". The meeting was opened by Deputy Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation Yuri Trutnev and Minister of the Russian Federation for the Development of the Far East and the Arctic Alexey Chekunkov. The event was attended by the Governor of the Murmansk region Andrey Chibis.
The speakers noted that processes are emerging in the Far East and the Arctic that will determine the life of the country for many decades – modern ice-class vessels are being built, the foundations of new logistics routes are being laid, cities are developing.
"The Arctic is now attracting the attention of the world's leading powers. This is the kitchen of the world weather, the shortest way from America to Eurasia, a storehouse of natural resources. The Arctic is 28% of the territory of the Russian Federation, 20,000 kilometers of the maritime border, 250 settlements inhabited by 2.5 million people, including 100,000 representatives of the indigenous peoples of the North. The development of the North and the Far East is a state priority, which is supported by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Russia should be a leader in the development of northern science and technology and tourism. We support the correct slogan of the governor of the Murmansk region Andrey Chibis: "Living in the North" should be comfortable and interesting," said Alexey Chekunkov.
Recall that in the Murmansk region, both large–scale projects are being implemented that create new sectors of the economy, and small ones aimed at developing tourism and service in individual municipalities.
The total amount of investments actually invested in the development of the economy is 900 billion rubles. The implementation of investment projects in the Murmansk Region directly affects the development of the Northern Sea Route and the increase in cargo traffic along this transport artery.
In addition, the infrastructure is developing. So, thanks to the support of President Vladimir Putin, in the next three years, the federal budget provides financing for the renovation of the Murmansk Region's infrastructure about 10 billion rubles annually. The Russian Government also approved a list of key settlements in the Arctic, which included three agglomerations – Murmansk, Kirovsko-Apatitskaya and Monchegorskaya, for the development and security of which additional federal funds will be allocated.
The plenary session was attended by representatives of federal authorities, governors of the Far Eastern Federal District and the Russian Arctic regions, heads of major companies implementing investment projects in various industries.
The speakers discussed the achievements and development of locomotive industries: mining, fishing, logistics, petrochemistry, construction, tourism, space and the Northern Sea Route.
