The State Duma will consider the initiative of the Murmansk region to increase the production of canned cod liver

The relevant bill is included in the legislative activity program of the lower house of Parliament for the spring session.

Earlier, a draft law was submitted to the State Duma, prepared by a group of senators on the initiative of the Murmansk Region and the fishing community. During the preparation of the law for the first reading, comments were made to the editorial board of a legal, technical and linguistic nature, which led to the withdrawal of the initiative. Currently, senators, in cooperation with deputies and industry experts, have introduced a new version of the bill to establish the specifics of coastal fishing in the Northern Fisheries Basin. The authors believe that changes in legislation will increase the production of canned cod liver oil by about 900 thousand cans.

"Currently, canned cod liver in the sea can only be produced in industrial fishing on large commercial processing vessels, which produce frozen fillets, carcasses, minced meat, offal and such canned goods. Restrictive measures are designed to ensure onshore processing with fresh raw materials, but in practice, in the case of cod liver, they do not work, since in most cases the raw materials cannot be brought ashore without significant quality losses. As a result, the cod liver has to be disposed of," explained Elena Diaghileva.

Recall that the adjustment of the requirements of the legislation, according to which it is currently impossible for small and medium-tonnage coastal fishing vessels to produce products from valuable raw materials at sea, was supported by the Governor of the Murmansk region, Andrey Chibis, and representatives of the polar industry. According to experts, the adoption of the law will support coastal fishing in the Barents Sea.
