Key Arctic development projects discussed in Moscow

A working meeting was held in Moscow between Yuri Trutnev, Deputy Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation and Plenipotentiary Representative of the President of the Russian Federation in the Far Eastern Federal District, and Andrey Chibis, Governor of the Murmansk Region. During the meeting, the parties discussed a wide range of issues related to the development of the Russian Arctic.

The main focus is on the implementation of a comprehensive plan for the development of the Arctic and the Transarctic transport corridor. Governor Andrey Chibis noted that active work is underway to fulfill the President's instructions given following the results of the International Arctic Forum. At the site of the State Council Commission on the Northern Sea Route and the Arctic, together with federal colleagues, the content and mechanisms for the implementation of this strategic project are being specified.

Another important topic of discussion was the initiative to hold the Year of the Arctic.

"In the context of increasing political tension around the development of the Arctic and increasing external influence, Yuri Petrovich and I agreed on the need to declare 2027 the Year of the Arctic in the Russian Federation. This will highlight Russia's role as a leading Arctic power. Murmansk, as the capital of the Russian Arctic, with its unique infrastructure and strategic location, will be an ideal venue for the International Arctic Forum 2027 and other events this year," said Governor Andrey Chibis.

During the meeting, they also discussed issues of financing the infrastructure of the Capital of the Arctic priority development area and the prospects for transferring long-range pier ownership to the Murmansk Region. The overhaul of the facility will create a modern point of entry for cruise ships, which will open up new opportunities for the development of Arctic tourism.
