Lithium mining operations have begun at the Polmostundrovskoye field

Lithium projects based in the Murmansk Region are being implemented on time, Governor Andrey Chibis said during a report at a Forum of Supporters of the United Russia Party on April 18.

In particular, the head of the region noted that the first ore extraction was carried out at the Polmostundrovskoye deposit in the Lovozersk district. Thus, the Murmansk Region becomes Russia's flagship region for the resumption of lithium mining, a strategically important metal critically needed for the production of batteries, electronics and the nuclear industry.

During the report, the head of the Murmansk Region, Andrey Chibis, noted that reaching full design capacity of lithium projects would provide Russia not only with import substitution for critically important raw materials, create export potential, allowing the country to gain independence from foreign supplies, but also ensure a place in the top three world leaders in lithium reserves.

"The development of lithium deposits is not just the extraction of raw materials and the creation of new industries in the region, but the basis for the long—term technological independence of our country. The projects are aimed at import substitution, the development of its own mineral resource base and the creation of more than 400 high-paying jobs in the Arctic. During the project period, tax revenues will amount to 5.5 billion rubles. The government provides comprehensive support and comprehensive support to the initiators of the projects at all stages of implementation," said Andrey Chibis, Governor of the Murmansk Region.
The development of the unique mineral resource base of the Kola Peninsula, in particular the implementation of projects for the extraction of strategic metals of the 21st century, is a separate item of the national program "Live in the North!", which is being implemented in cooperation with the United Russia party. The combined capacity of the two largest lithium deposits being developed in the Murmansk Region will be about 3 million tons of ore per year.

During the annual report, the head of the region, Andrey Chibis, separately noted the development of the rare and rare earth metals industry in the Murmansk region.

"We are facing the task set by the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, to build a complete and sovereign chain of production of separated rare earth metal oxides. The starting point for this is the development of Lovozersky GOK as the most promising enterprise in the country in this industry," said Governor Andrey Chibis.

It should be recalled that Lovozersky GOK has joined the structure of the State Corporation Rosatom, which implements a large-scale modernization program for the enterprise, updates equipment, and develops staff competencies. The extensive GOK modernization program is being implemented with the support of the federal Government and will become a new milestone in the development of the rare and rare earth metals industry. In 2025 alone, the company invested more than 800 million in the renovation of the industrial infrastructure, purchased new mills, winches, and electric locomotives.
